Day 1: Juan Santamaria Airport - San José

Welcome to Costa Rica ! Reception at the Juan Santamaria International Airport near San José, at 1150 meters above sea level in the heart of the Central Valley.


First contact with Costa Rica, your private driver will give you your travel documents and will take you to your hotel.




Night at the hotel Posada del Museo.

Day 2: San José - Rara Avis

Transfer from San José to the small town of Horquetas around Sarapiqui.
On the way you will pass through the opulent Braulio Carrillo Park, covered with a thick wet tropical forest waterpoured with rainstorms.
Arrive to the small town of Horquetas, the departure point to go Rara Avis, the wet tropical forest reserve, one of the oldest private reserve in Costa Rica. Wearing wellington boots (provided by the lodge!) you will go with a tractor pulled charrette. The track heading to the lodge crosses pastures, streams and rivers before braving the steep parts firstly muddy then impassable to the point where you will have to continue by foot...
Arrive to the lodge in one of the wildest and isolated site of the country.


At dark you will go and explore the tropical forest when most of the animals start to appear. With a specialist naturalist guide you will encounter numerous insects, frogs, some nocturnal mammals and maybe snakes. Before being totally captivated by the forest melody you will be back to your hotel.


Night at the Rara Avis Rainforest Lodge & Reserve.

Day 3: Rara Avis

In the morning start a trek at the heart of the jungle. The walking paths cross the tropical forest and pass near waterfalls and natural pools. The biodiversity there is outstanding: anteaters, monkeys, spiders, porcupine, boas constrictor, coral snake, red eyed frogs and almost 400 bird species.

Day 4: Rara Avis - Horquetas - Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui

Return by foot or with a tractor to Horquetas.
Then, off to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, an important river port since colonial times, whose forests are a refuge for tapirs, sloths, coatis and various monkeys.
Reception at the hotel near palm plantations, bananas and pineapple.

Day 5: Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui - Puerto Viejo de Talamanca - Amubri


Departure towards the Costa Rican Caribbean coast.
Along the way you can stop in Limon, capital of the province of the same name. The port of Moin, lively, frequently hosts cruise lines; it is also here that bananas are packed before exporting them to Europe.
You pass close to Cahuita and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca and continue to the small village of Bambu where your Bribri local guide will be waiting for you.

Note: 4 to 5 hour drive

Continue to the village of Suretka where you leave your transport and cross the Rio Sixaola in the dugout.
On the other side you take the local bus which will leave you in the village of Amubri, at the Koswak inn.
After a welcome speech and a well deserved dinner, you will participate in an evening of traditional singing or an introductory course to the Bribri language before you fall asleep lulled by the sounds of the forest.

Day 6: Amubri - Yorkin

Early morning is the departure for a day of hiking in the jungle. The first test is to cross the river Uren, on foot or horseback. During the day you will pass through banana and cacao plantations which are the main resources of the region. You will come across Bribri villages as well as Katsi and Shuabb, and be greeted by children who will walk your way. For lunch, you will take a break and enjoy a picnic lunch in typical coated banana leaf at the edge of one of the many rivers in the area.

Note: Intermediate to difficult level - 6-8 hours of leveled walking.


By mid afternoon you will be recieved by Guillermo's family in Yorkin.

Day 7: Yorkin


After a hearty breakfast, there is a two hour hike among rivers and jungle.
First you pass through cacao plantations before arriving in Panama, after a "brief stay" in this country you will walk alongside the yorkin river, enjoying the clear and refreshing waters and the surrounding nature. Finally you can swim in a natural pool before enjoying a traditional lunch served in a banana leaf or Calatea.
The return will be to the rhythm of your boater who through wooden oars moves the cayuca.

In the late afternoon you will be introduced to indigenous art, you will learn how to burn symbolic drawings on a pumpking or weave palm suita used to cover the roofs of ranchos.
In the evening, you may have the opportunity to listen to songs and BriBri legends around a campfire.

Overnight, basic comfort.

Day 8: Yorkin - Bambu - Puerto Viejo de Talamanca - Playa Cocles


After a last breakfast in their company, you will return by canoe to Bambú, along the Yorking river.
Continue on the road towards Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. Arrive at the hotel.

Day 9: Puerto Viejo de Talamanca - Turrialba Valley

In the morning, you will head to Turrialba Valley, famous for its pure air and rafting.

On your way, you can stop at Guayabo National Monument, one of the few archeological sites of Costa Rica. This still mysterious place of 218ha located on the southern slope of Turrialba Volcano, is of major cultural and religious importance. Inhabited from 1500 BC to 1400 AD, it supposedly welcomed, at its climax about 10.000 people before becoming deserted for unknown reasons.

Then, drive to your hotel.

Day 10: Turrialba Valley


In the early morning, leave for a day of adventure and exploration of the Pacuare area, some parts in the water, others in the air... Meet with your guides and get ready at Finca de la Cruz in the surroundings of Turrialba. When equipped, you will board the rafts and start to navigate through canyons and abundant vegetation.

After lunch go to the zip-line course and fly over the tropical vegetation suspended only by cables from one tree to another.
Return to the hotel at the end of the day.

Day 11: Turrialba Valley - La Palma


In the morning you will leave towards Turrialba to the South Pacific Coast and the Osa Peninsula.
You will initially cross Cerro de la Muerte, in the San Gerardo de Dota region, known for its cloudy forest and for the sightseens of the flamboyant Quetzal. You will continue until La Palma to stay in Lodge Danta Corcovade, in a tropical area.

Day 12: La Palma - Station Los Patos (Corcovado National Park) - Station La Sirena (Corcovado National Park)

Transport from Danta Lodge to Los Patos.

Early departure for a day of hiking in the Corcovado Park, considered the jewel of tropical reserves in the world.
You will walk through the largest rainforest in the Pacific coast of America between waterfalls and crystalline pools. You will have the opportunity to observe a wide variety of birds, including the harpy eagle and red macaws.
It is also here that we have the best chance to see jaguars and tapirs, especially on the beaches at dusk.
This day of walking takes you to the entrance of Los Patos to the post of La Sirena.
Late in the afternoon you will arrivo to the shelter facility.

Walking time: 6 to 8 hours, Distance: about 18 km, Level: Difficult

Day 13: Station La Sirena (Corcovado National Park) - Station la Leona (Corcovado National Park) - Carate


After breakfast a new day of walking awaits, this time under the sign of the disorientation, heat (often extreme) and paradisiacal landscapes!
The route will run along the rivers, or deserted beaches where you have the opportunity to enjoy some swimming time (watch currents).
Picnic lunch to then continue the trek. You will need to repeatedly enter the forest, the rocks often prevent walking along the beach.
You will definitely come across many animals (mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds like the scarlet macaw) and insects (6000 species in the park).
Arrive late afternoon to the "tent camp".

Walking time: 6-7 hours, Distance: about 16 km; Level: Difficult

Day 14: Carate - Puerto Jimenez - Juan Santamaria Airport - San José


In the morning you will go join the small village of Carate after 45 minutes of walking on the beach.
From here you reach the edge of Puerto Jimenez Golfo Dulce.

Note: 45 minutes walk; 1:30 to 2:00 drive, count 10 USD per person for public transport
Return to Puerto Jimenez for your flight to San José.

Note 1: approx. 1 hour flight. times and compagny to be advised at booking time.
Note 2: Be aware of the baggage weight limitation (about 12 kg per person).
